Smashbox O Glow & O Gloss..and little Dior too

On twitter recently, the lovely Lee from http://www.mwah.ie asked whether anyone had tried either the Smashbox O Gloss or O Glow.

I'm always looking for an excuse for a blog post (inspiration is lacking a bit at the moment) and so as I've got both, I offered to do some swatches.

The picture below was taken this morning, so its in daylight without flash.  To give you an idea of what the shades are really like, I'm a MAC NW15 that doesn't tan at all. I'm not quite deathly pale, but I'm not far from it!

Top to bottom you've got Dior Lip Glow Colour Reviving Balm, Smashbox O Gloss, then Smashbox O Glow.

The idea behind all three products is that they work with your skin to make the perfect colour for your complexion.

Do I buy that?  Mmm.  No.  I think they work with heat, a bit like the old mood lipsticks that looked green in the tube but went on pink that seemed so magical when you had them as a kid.

That's not to say that I don't like the products, but I just don't believe the "perfect colour" business if for no other reason than i ended up with the Smashbox O Gloss because my friend Charlotte bought it and it didn't look right on her.  Surely it should look right on anyone if it matches your skintone?

That little rant aside, I quite like all three products.  The two Smashbox products are slightly more blue based pinks than the Dior, which is more of a warm pink.  I'm happy to wear either, although I do love how a blue based pink helps make your teeth look brighter.  Smashbox actually make a Smile Brightening Lip Gloss for this very purpose but thats another review for another day!

Its quite hard to do a like for like comparison on the lip products because they're different types.  The Dior is a balm and the O Gloss is (funnily enough) a gloss.

As glosses go, O Gloss isn't massively sticky which I like.  It turns a nice shade of pink, but I wouldn't expect it to be massively noticeable.  Its more a subtle flush than "POW" pink.  I don't find that the glossy element has massive staying power, but really what gloss does?

The Dior Lip Glow, being a balm, is much more moisturising than the O Gloss.  As a personal preference, I like this texture much better as I like to feel my beauty goodies doing something more than looking nice.  The other major plus point for the Dior product is the packaging, which is just gorgeous and girly:

The nice thing about the "O" products - and this is especially nice in the O Glow as its a cheek colour - is that they do leave a stain of colour.  I did these swatches before I got in the shower at around 7:30am today.  The swatch of the O Glow was on my arm all day, until I scrubbed it off in the bath at 8pm!  The downer to that is when you apply the O Glow it stains your fingers pink...and it really is the shade of pink on the tube too!

Overall, I'm a huge Smashbox fan and I've really never been disappointed with anything I've had from the range (which, due to my lack of self control is quite a lot) and the "O" products are the same.  even if they do only react with heat, its a lovely shade of pink that lifts your skintone and makes you look that bit brighter and that's what you want in a blusher isn't it?

As for the Lip Glow, its the only Dior item I own and I wasn't disappointed at all.  The only thing that lets it down is the price - around £20!

So, what about you?  Do you like the idea of something that turns your "perfect" shade of pink?  If you've tried any of these products I'd love to know what you think of them..

P.S. - Lee, thank you for the post inspiration!

42 Beauty Questions

This little quiz has been floating around on YT and lots of the beauty blogs I read lately, so I decided I'd give it a go.  Its called 40 beauty questions, but there seems to be 42!

Skincare

1 - How many times do you wash your face daily?
Twice.  Once in the morning and once in the evening.  If I've been wearing makeup I'll usually take it off as soon as I get in and then wash my face before bed just to make sure its definitely all off!

2 - What skin type do you have?
Mine is normal/combination.  I get oily on my nose, everywhere else is pretty well behaved.

3 - What is your current facial wash?

I'm using Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing facial wash at the moment.  I'd started to feel like my skin wasn't as smooth at it used to be so I'm giving this a go to see if it helps.  Its only really a short term treatment, one that you use for a few weeks every few months.  Once I've finished my little course of this I'll try and finish up some of the other things that are open - see post below on project bathroom!

4 - Do you exfoliate?
Yes, always!

5 - What brand do you use?

At the moment the Elemis Tri-Enzyme range is acting as an exfoliating system but otherwise I really like Boots No 7 Total Renewal Microdermabrasion, or better yet a Boots Facial Sponge with whatever cleanser I'm using at the time.

6 - What moisturiser do you use?
See, this is where i'm naughty.  I'm not good at moisturising.  At the moment I'm using Olay Complete Care Daily Radiance Illuminating UV fluid in the mornings and Elemis Tri-Enzyme serum and night cream at night.

7 - Do you have freckles?
I do, but they aren't as noticeable as they were when I was younger.

8 - Do you use eye cream?
Only when I remember.  I feel very fortunate to not be too bothered by undereye bags/dark circles at the moment.

9 - Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
No, I've been extremely fortunate there.  I get the odd spot, but thankfully thats it.

10 - Did you ever have to use Pro-Activ?
No

Make-up

11 - What foundation do you use?
At the moment, I'm using one of three, depending on the occasion, my skin and how lazy I'm feeling.  I've got L'Oreal True Match, MAC Select SPF15 and Smashbox Halo all on the go at the moment.  I probably use the Halo most often because its quick and easy and gives a nice light coverage.

12 - How about concealer?
MAC Select Cover Up and L'Oreal Touche Magique are the two I've got at the moment, but I don't wear them every day.

13 - Do you know your undertone colour?
Warm is about as much as I can tell you.

14 - What do you think of fake eyelashes?
I love them for going out in the evening, although I hate applying them as I'm slightly clumsy.  I really love how glam they can make you look in a way that just no mascara can.

15 - Did you know you were supposed to change your mascara every 3 months?
I did know that, but I can't say as I do.  As long as it doesn't smell funny, I haven't had an eye infection and it hasn't dried out (I usually judge this by the texture and hether it still makes a kissy noise when you pull the wand out)  I'll keep it for longer.

16 - What brand of mascara do you use?
I only really tend to use cheaper ones from Boots or Supedrug.  At the moment I'm loving Rimmel Sexy Curves and the new Maybelline The Falsies one too.  Both manage to stay on without any flaking or clumping.  I'm an eye-rubber, so that's important for me.

17 - Sephora or Mac?
I remember when there was a Sephora at Bluewater and I loved it there.  Unfortunately, its not there any more so I'll have to say MAC.

18 - Do you have a Mac Pro card?
No, I'm not a pro and to be fair, if I had one I'd be extremely poor! lol

19 - What makeup tools do you use in makeup application?
I'm a big fan of using my fingers for as much application as I can, because they warm the product and I find it blends easier.  In terms of brushes, I'm a fan of Smashbox and ELF - both make great ones.

20 - Do you use makeup base/primer for the eyes?
Yes.  Either a MAC Paint Pot, Benefit Creaseless Cream shadow, Urban Decay Primer potion, or in a pinch Too Faced Shadow insurance.  Of all of them, I prefer the Urban Decay.

21 - For the face?
Yes, especially if its under a mineral foundation.  I've got Smashbox Photo Finish, L'Oreal Studio Secrets Resurfacing and if I'm having a bit of a red day, which sadly does happen from time to time, No 7 Colour Calming Makeup Base.

22 - What is your favourite eyeshadow?colour or shade?

I like neutrals for day.  If I'm wearing makeup at work I tend to go with a light colour all over and then a brighter eyeliner for a pop of colour.  For the evenings, I like greys for a smokey eye.  I would say the only colour I don't really like for eyes is pink because it makes me look tired.

23 - Do you use pencil or liquid liner?
Mostly pencil, or sometimes eyeshadow with the liquid that sets shadow to liner.  I love that because it means you double your collection with one product!  Its lovely to use with Barry M Dazzle Dusts for funky eyeliner.

24 - How often do you poke your eyes with an eyeliner pencil?
Remarkably, given how clumsy I am, never!

25 - What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?
I like them when I've got time to apply them properly.  I hate fallout though, so when using them I use a sponge applicator - don't ask me why, but I get much less fallout when I use one of these - or I do my eyes before the rest of my face so I can easily clean up any stray pigment.

26 - Do you use mineral makeup?
Yep.  I've run out of my favourite, which is Lily Lolo in Candy Cane, but I do plan to buy some more soon.

27 - What is your favourite lipstick?
MAC Syrup is lovely, and I really like Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Awakening Balm too.

28 - How about lipgloss?
I don't wear them much because I always get my hair stuck in it, but I love Smashbox Lip Enhancing gloss in Candid, Bourjois Effet 3D Les Nudes in Brun Poetic, L'Oreal Glam Shine in Forever Nude and ANY lip gloss by Estee Lauder because they smell divine!

29 - What is your favourite blush to use?
I love Benefit Dandelion, Boots No 7 Natural Blush in Honey, and Barry M Blush in shade 01.

30 - Do you buy your makeup on Ebay?
I've had a few bits and pieces.  There's one lovely lady in the US who sells various Smashbox bits and bobs and I've had a few things from her.  I wouldn't buy anything high end though, too many fakes out there.

31 - Do you like drugstore makeup?
I love it.  For one, its more easily accessible for me - my nearest MAC counter is about half an hour away but Boots and Superdrug are just 10 minutes walk from my office.  I don't necessarily believe that expensive = good for makeup.  Its all about finding what works for you.

32 - Do you go to CCO's?Cosmetic Company Outlet?
Whenever I'm near one, yes!  Nothing like snapping up a MAC bargain.  I got 3 eye shadows recently for about 25% less than I could have got them online or at a counter, so I was chuffed to bits!

33 - Did you ever consider taking makeup classes?
I've looked in the past.  I like my current job and unfortunately the hours can be quite long so I don't know if I'd stick to a course in the evenings, I think I'd be too tired.  I love learning from other blogs and YT though.

34 - Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
Yeah, I think I can be.  I'd still consider myself a bit of a novice at application, so there are some things that if I get them perfect, its more by luck than skill!

35 - Name a makeup crime that you hate?
This is an easy one.   When foundation isn't blended down the chin/neck properly.  It doesn't take much to do and if you don't do it, it looks ridiculous.

36 - Do you like colourful shades of makeup (lipstick or eyeshadow) or neutral ones?
I love bright colours on my eyes, but not so much on my lips.  It really all depends on my mood.

37 - Which celebrity always has great makeup?
I always think Kate Hudson looks stunning, as does Jennifer Lopez.

38 - If you could leave the house using just ONE makeup item, what would you use?
Its not vital that I use anything, but probably lip balm!

39 - Could you leave the house without any makeup on?
Yeah,  I do it all the time.  I went to work today without a scrap of makeup on.  I don't feel like I HAVE to wear it to be presentable.  For me its a nice accent to the bits I like, but I don't care if people see me without.

40 - Do you think you look good even without any makeup on?
I'm worried that this one will make me sound a bit arrogant, but I think I look fine without makeup.  I'm actually really happy with my face and I'd even go so far as to say that I feel quite pretty.  My body though?  That's another story!

41 - In your opinion what is the BEST makeup line?
I couldn't possibly pick.  I use so many things from so many brands and I think different brands are better at different things.  If you had a gun to my head and I had to choose, I'd probably say MAC because of how good the pigmentation is.

42 - What do you think of makeup?

I love it...its the ultimate tool of transformation!  You can change so much with different makeup and in turn, that changes how you feel.  I've had the conversation many a time with people (men, usually!) who have said its something to hide behind, but I disagree totally.  If you're doing it right, its not a mask, its accentuating your best features and detracting from your lesser best features! :)

Blimey - that took me longer than I thought it would.  Its been fun to answer though...they arent necessariy questions I'd consider all the time so its nice to get the beauty brain ticking rather than just doing the usual.

Bathroom Audit

I've had a bit of a rubbish day today. I've hurt my neck and so moving is a bit of a challenge.

I decided that I'd try to do something so that today wasn't a total waste. That something was a bathroom audit. That something was also a total eye-opener.

I've been thinking about doing this for a couple of weeks, since I read Laura over at Lollipop Loves... post about Project Bathroom. Its basically the toiletries equivalent of project ten pan. You have to use up a bunch of stuff before you buy any more.

I realise that for most people that's just what you do. But for those of us with a beauty addiction, its easier said than done. New things come out all the time and I guess the majority of us are searching for the Holy Grail products that we almost never find.

So. I sat in my bathroom and made a list of everything in there. I suggest that if you're going to carry on reading you may want to nip to the loo and possibly make yourself a drink...its a long list.

If its got a * next to it, it means its a trial/travel size product. Like that's going to make it any better.

I'm totally shocked.  I knew I had a lot of stuff.  I'm a hoarder with everything, but especially with things I like.  I just can't believe how much I've actually got.  It took me over 20 minutes to write it all down.  About a month ago I did a clear out and gave some bits to my friend Charlotte (*waves* because I know she's reading) and I even gave some hairspray to someone at work this week.

I am now officially on Project Bathroom.  I really don't see that I have any other option.  I couldn't possibly need any more of any type of product until at least half of that lot is gone.  There are 91 products in that list.  91.  Its totally shameful.

Lots of these things are half empty or almost finished, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to get it all down quite quickly.  i'll do an update in a week or so and we'll see where I am.

The only thing I am going to allow myself to buy is some Tigi Superstar shampoo/conditioner.  What I've got is okay but nothing special and I would like to have something for "best".  Sexy smelling hair is important!
